Is your dog leash reactive and embarrassing while out in public? If so, you are not alone. Many dog parents experience the same thing and as a result feel frustrated, ashamed, and embarrassed to walk their dog regularly.
If you think about it, you can certainly understand why some dogs react so poorly when they see another dog walk by or come into view. The reactive dog most likely feels vulnerable and trapped on a leash. Your dog is aware that his movements and ability to flee or protect himself are restricted.
Most dogs can be taught to react in a more peaceful & positive manner. We simply need to put in some time and effort to teach them. Once you teach them a new response you will see how eager and happy, and relieved they become.
Our dogs can and should be taught to “watch” us or “look” at us when they see another dog (or any distraction). Make sure your dog knows his name and looks for you. Positive reinforcement, using treats and praise really make a difference in reinforcing the desired behavior or reaction that we want from our dog.
This technique or exercise must be practiced just like anything else. Always have a nice high value treat with you wherever you go. The word WATCH can be your cue word to get your dog to look at your face and make eye contact. Once eye contact is made and held for the desired length of time you will treat the dog. Eventually your dog will automatically look to your face when he sees another dog approach or come into view.
Sometimes the equipment we are using on our dog may make the behavior worse. You will want to consider what you are currently using and change to another alternative. For example, if you are using a harness you may want to switch to a choker, prong or traditional collar/leash hook up. Some of the communication that takes place between the handler and the dog actually happens with a slight leash pressure vs a command. Our dogs can read that pressure and our body language.
If you need further assistance, you should seek out a reputable trainer. We would love to hear from you so please, also feel free to contact us directly with questions, comments or what works for you.
